Now, on her blog, Jillian has begun a series of posts touring her readers around her Vancouver home. In an exciting peek through the keyhole, the most compelling posts are about some of the more under-appreciated areas of one’s living space. Here, find out more about what makes a Jillian Harris house, and get some interiors ideas for the lesser-loved areas of the home.
A Jillian Harris House: First Impressions
A Jillian Harris house is clean, fresh, welcoming and stylish. The palette is breezy and neutral, reminiscent of springtime. Therefore, to emulate her classic style, it is important that the right ambiance is created as soon as one enters the home. The hallway can be an under-loved area – some see it as unusable space, or, it ends up being cluttered by coats and shoes. In her home tour article, Jillian rues the presence of mess in her hall. Jillian came up with a neat solution for coat and shoe storage, using simple, economical hooks from the Pottery Barn and ingenious built-in shelves for shoes and bags.
Practical is Beautiful: The Laundry Room
Just because an area of the home is functional, doesn’t mean that it can’t be beautiful. For instance, Jillian Harris says that her laundry room is her pride and joy. Usually, Jillian’s go-to color would be white – however, for the laundry room, she chose to incorporate a splash of color.
By selecting a beautiful pale blue, the cabinets surrounding the washer and dryer were given a cheerful, breezy look to offset the functional aesthetic of the machines. Furthermore, Jillian selected a rustic patterned tile for the floor, marrying practicality with beauty. Teamed with a rustic farmhouse sink, the space was chic and nostalgic, yet thoroughly functional.
Entertaining Right: The Spare Bedroom & Bathroom
If you do a lot of entertaining, the spare bedroom requires attention. Often, people may see their spare bedroom as a location for hand-me-down bedroom furnishings and sheets – however, Jillian points out that your spare bedroom and bathroom should make your guests feel as comfortable as possible. For example, Jillian suggests locating your guest quarters in a private location in the house, far from the rest of its inhabitants. Furthermore, so guests are comfortable, Jillian suggests leaving a selection of blankets hung over a decorative ladder. Moving to the spare bathroom, Jillian teamed a fresh white palette with warm peach accents. The most intriguing part of her spare bathroom design is the details – for example, the gorgeous pearlescent inlays in the bathroom cabinet knobs are from Symphony by Schaub.
Fun & Stylish: Children’s Playrooms
Within a Jillian Harris house, the family is central to the home. However, having a dedicated room for children’s play is the ideal way to contain any mess! For instance, for her son Leo’s playroom, Jillian made sure there was plenty of storage for toys and games. Therefore, she selected some large, square drawers in a fitted unit to store awkwardly sized toys quickly and easily. In terms of color, Jillian stuck with her signature white – however, for a child’s room, she added bright accents, such as sunshine yellows and sky blues. These flourishes were then complemented with an adorable accent wall, featuring illustrations of books.
